Bacteria use small molecules to sense and respond to their environment. The production of these small molecules is tightly regulated and in many cases requires environmental cues that are difficult to simulate under monoculture conditions in the laboratory. To interrogate the full repertoire of small molecules produced by selected bacterial strains, we utilize interspecies or symbiotic interactions as a conduit to the discovery and structural elucidation of novel bioactive secondary metabolites.
