Human population growth, habitat simplification, and domestication of plants and animals have created novel ecological niches. Some microbes are able to emerge into these niches and cause diseases that threaten public health and agricultural production. My project investigates genomic signatures of recent host restrictions in an emerging plant pathogen, and then utilizes genomics – guided functional characterizations to understand novel host – pathogen interactions that underlie host specificity, transmission strategies, and virulence in this system.
